No-Frills Hard Apple Cider

This is absolutely the worst hard cider recipe on the web. But it does work. If you want to try different juices, methods, or nuanced flavors, you should probably check other sites (I have one listed after the recipe).

Ingredients and Supplies (clickable - with some affiliate links)

One 51 ounce glass bottle of Martinelli's apple juice (I got mine from Vitacost.com)
1/4 cup of brown sugar
A few drops of iodophor
1 packet of cider yeast
Air lock (this kind or this kind - either works)
Before you start, make sure the airlock stopper fits the bottle! Mine worked perfectly and I have the second kind.

1. Open the apple juice and pour a little out to make room for the brown sugar. Save the cap!
2. Carefully add the brown sugar and about 1/4 to 1/2 tsp of the yeast. Store the remaining yeast in the refrigerator for the next batch.
3. Wash the airlock and swirl it around in a bowl of water to which you have added a few drops of iodophor.
4. Fill the airlock with water and plug it into the top of the apple juice bottle.
5. Wait and watch for bubbling. If the airlock is not bubbling after a day or so, you may need to add more yeast.
6. When the bubbling stops, wait another 1-3 weeks.
7. Wash the original cap in a bowl of water (with a few drops of iodophor), remove the airlock and replace it with the original cap.
8. Chill the bottle if desired. Drink and enjoy!
9. When it is empty, wash and sterilize the bottle and cap with a dilute iodophor solution. Rinse well and store with the cap on and you are ready for the next batch!

Please refer to this website for a more refined (and greater volume) method.
